In my other life, I write historical fiction. I’m studying medieval English genealogy charts to decipher my hero’s family.
His grandmother was born only 28 years before him, which means she gave birth to his mother at 13 or 14, who gave birth to him about the same age. But it’s the middle ages, I think.
Except it’s still happening.
In developing countries, one girl in seven marries before age 15. Medical complications from pregnancy are the leading cause of death among girls ages 15 to 19 worldwide.
But if a girl can stay in school for seven or more years, she marries four years later and has 2.2 fewer children. Her life can look like this:
